Technical terms are always slippery; the user tries to pack as much
specialized meaning into one word as she or he can, the reader is often
unsure just what is in the package.

A simple solution is to say it in English, just as you did: "rotten
wood," "bare soil," "decorticated wood," and so on. Databases are pretty
flexible and you don't have to speak Latin to them if you don't want.
