New book Atlas and Red Book of Bryophytes of Portugal
We are pleased to announce the new book Atlas and Red Book of the Threatened Bryophytes of Portugal
This publication was produced based on the criteria and threat categories of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN, 2001, 2005) and on the adaptations of these for Europe. The Atlas and Red Book includes:
• A detailed Red List of the Bryophytes of Portugal and an updated threat status classification;
• The identification of priority areas for conservation based on biodiversity hotspots and for potential use in defining Important Plant Areas;
• The proposal of specific conservation measures for threatened bryophytes as a whole as well as for each taxon individually and their associated habitat;
• The summarized description and update of the chorological and ecological knowledge on 141 bryophytes with a CR, EN, VU, NT and LC-att status in Portugal presented in separate datasheets with each taxon distribution map.
This publication demonstrates the central importance of this flora for conservation, and draws on a wide range of expertise and collections. Written and edited by experts of Portuguese bryophytes, this book demonstrates a valuable resource that can be used in research, conservation, development and training in taxonomy, giving the actual status of Portuguese bryophytes for future generations. This book will also be of interest to readers in a wide range of fields including forestry, agriculture aspects, nature management entities and associations and museum curation.
