I completed my Masters degree in 1993 on karst bryophytes and have continued with that work, and other allied interests, such as Pottiaceae and bryophytes of biological soil crusts, ever since. I have been fortunate in recent years to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Chinese researchers studying biological soil crusts in the Gurbantunggut Desert of NW China and, at the other end of the world, to work on subantarctic bryophytes. Currently I am working on the role of bryophytes in determining strategies for the long term management of subtropical rainforests in eastern Australia. I am a Senior Research Fellow in Biological Sciences at Macquarie University and I have had considerable experience working with undergraduate and postgraduate students, both in Australia and overseas. At a time when academic staff at universities around the world are more and more frustrated by increasing administrative work, my present position allows me greater opportunities to facilitate local and international collaborative studies. I would also like to promote bryology to the general public to overcome many of the less favourable preconceptions about bryophytes. Bryonet for example, could provide some wonderful ideas and source material for exciting and interesting articles for newspapers and magazines.

I got my first introduction in mosses and bryology already during the first years of my botany studies in the University of Helsinki. Since that they have been my main interest in botany and my research work deals with the systematics and evolutionary history of Hypnalean mosses. I have been working in the Finnish Museum of Natural History, Helsinki, and I defended my PhD thesis on systematics of moss families Meteoriaceae and Brachytheciaceae at the University of Helsinki at 2004. After that I worked in the Swedish Museum of Natural History, Stockholm, and in the University of Turku, in South Western Finland. Since autumn 2011 I have worked as a curator of in the herbarium of the University of Turku. Besides curating bryological collections my work includes both teaching and research on bryophytes.

During my research carrier I have learnt to appreciate tight international contacts among bryological community. Most of research work has been done in collaboration with colleagues from abroad and this network provides valuable support and insights on bryological work that is done in other countries. At national level I am a member of the Finnish work group for endangered bryophytes and a board member in the Finnish Bryological Association. As an IAB council member I hope to improve opportunities especially for young bryologists to participate IAB meetings and other activities and to contribute active international communication within the association.

Yong Kien-Thai

Yong Kien-Thai is a bryologist from University of Malaya, Malaysia, who have twelve years experience in the study of bryology. He has good field experience and general understanding about the bryophyte flora of his home country (Penisular Malaysia and north Borneo), as well as the neighboring region, such as Java and Sumatra. His main research interest is on the taxonomy and systematic of bryophyte, and always keen to learn more about the bryophyte ecology and get involved in the conservation of this tiny pretty plant. If he has been elected as a council member, he will contribute in promoting the researches and understandings on bryophytes among the bryological and non-bryological community, especially in the South East Asian region.

Yelitza Leon

I am a professor of the Merida Botanical Garden Institute of the Universidad de Los Andes, Venezuela, also I am the Executive Director of the Institute and president of Merida Botanical Garden Foundation. As a bryologist I organized the XV bryologist world congress in Merida, Venezuela and also the II tropical bryology course in Venezuela in the year 1996. As part of the the Latin american association of bryology I have been the editor of briolatina during the years 2006-2010. Also I am one of the editors of the journal Tropical Bryology. I founded the bryology collection of the herbarium MERC and I have advised undergraduate and graduate bryology students contributing to the growth of bryology in Venezuela. I have had several projects on floristic, ecology and taxonomy of bryophytes. Including conservation campaigns for bryophyte conservation in Venezuela, building the redlist of venezuelan mosses, taxonomy of the Cryphaeaceae, ecology of cloud forest mosses and more recently tropical peatland mosses. Currently I am working on a database for the Venezuelan checklist of mosses which would very soon, enable specialists and public to handle and obtain information about Venezuela collections and species status. This project is financed by FONACIT. I have contact with latinamerican colleagues and I think as part of the IAB Council member I could be a good communicator and a voice in the council for latinamerican bryologists.

Itambo Malombe

I have worked as a research scientist at the East African Herbarium of National Museums of Kenya for the last fourteen years. i registered for tropical bryology course and participated in Taita Hills fieldwork organised by University of Nairobi in 2004. Since then i have been collecting bryophytes in various ecosystems of Kenya including the dryland inselbergs and rainforests which were hitherto less understood. I recently completed a study on epiphyllous bryophytes in Taita Hills funded by International Foundation for Science. During the same period i accomplished PhD studies in tropical bryology. My main interest is exploration of bryophytes in the tropics and systematic studies in Lejeuneaceae (Hepaticae). I have completed revision of the genus Cheilolejeunea in tropical Africa including the Mascarenes. I envisage to uphold the spirit of the International Association of Bryologists(IAB) to strengthen regional and international collaboration in bryophyte research if elected to the council. This will be accomplished through active participation in various activities, committees and events such as meetings and field work. I am currently a committee member to the East Africa RedListing Group and my experience will be useful in shaping up red listing activities of the IAB team.

Silvia Pressel

My interest in bryophytes began in 2002 with my PhD programme, which encompassed diverse aspects of bryophytes biology including physiology, cell and developmental biology, ecology and reproductive biology all variously interrelated to their systematics and phylogeny. In 2007 I was awarded the Irene Manton Prize for best UK PhD thesis in botany by the Linnean Society of London. Following on from my Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship, at Queen Mary University of London (2007 -2009), which focused on bryophyte desiccation biology, I am now a Researcher in Botanical Diversity specializing in bryophytes at the Natural History Museum, London. At the Museum I maintain my diverse research interests embracing all three bryophyte groups. My current research projects include: the search and evaluation of novel morphological characters in interpreting bryophyte phylogeny together with developmental and functional studies of these and traditional characters used in systematics; the evolution and functional significance of bryophyte stomata; and the phylogenetic distribution and functional significance of fungal endophytes in bryophytes. I have also a keen interest in bryophyte conservation and I collaborate regularly with UK and international organizations on ex situ approaches for the conservation of rare and endangered species – I am a member of the recently established EBESCONet (the European Bryophyte Ex situ Conservation Network) and a Council Member of the British Bryological Society. I regularly present my research at international conferences, carry out extensive field work both in the UK and overseas (North America, South America, South Africa, Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia and China) and have now published over 20 articles on mosses, liverworts and hornworts in a range of international journals. As an IAB Council Member, I would be particularly keen on promoting and fostering bryological activities and collaborations worldwide, in particular those on experimental biology and evolution of bryophytes and on their conservation.

Matt Renner

New Zealander by birth, completed Masters degree at University of Auckland in 2002 and Doctorate at University of Sydney in 2009. Currently residing in Sydney, Australia where I am based at the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney as a Postdoctoral Fellow. Undertaking a revision of the genus Radula for Australia, investigating mode and tempo of morphological evolution within the genus, and illuminating the origins of Australian taxa, in collaboration with Drs Nico Devos, and Elizabeth Brown as part of this project. The systematics of challenging groups, including Radulaceae and Lejeuneaceae, are particularly rewarding to me. The discovery and descriptive aspects of bryology are those I enjoy most, particularly getting out into the field, in remote, under-collected and poorly known areas of Australasia. I was a member of New Zealand’s Department of Conservation Threatened Species listing panel for Bryophytes in 2006 and 2009. Member of IAB since 2006, and to the committee I would contribute enthusiasm coupled with a maturing outlook emphasizing co-operation and collaboration, and a willingness to do as I’m told. I’d most like to see IAB continue to expand its advocacy role, and increase returns on membership.

Research interests in bryology: I am interested in the evolution of bryophytes in time and space. My research comprises systematic, phylogenetic and phylogeographic analyses of bryophytes, from relationships in major lineages to species circumscriptions and the population level. Current research lines include (i) molecular diversity of arctic bryophytes and their role in arctic food webs, (ii) phylogeography and disjunction patterns across the Atlantic Ocean, with a focus on Macaronesia, and (iii) phylogenetic inferences in haplolepideous and pleurocarpous mosses. Genera under study include haplolepideous taxa such as Campylopus, but also representatives of other moss as well as liverwort groups.

Possible contributions to IAB: In line with the IAB objectives, I consider it very important to develop and foster collaborations and networks to promote bryological research and the awareness of bryophytes in general. As displayed by my broad research program, I believe that multidisciplinary projects integrating classical and modern systematic, genomic and ecological approaches should be further developed. I already expressed my willingness to contribute to joining forces for establishing the ‘Bryophyte Tree of Life’, as discussed at the IBC 2011 in Melbourne. The IAB plays an important role in such projects as a platform for communication and dissemination of results. I can also contribute my experiences of strengthening collaborations between professional and amateur bryologists. Although being a small country, the Netherlands has a very active Bryological and Lichenological Society, which participates in fruitful collaborations such as the DNA barcoding project of the Dutch bryoflora. Furthermore, I can imagine to contribute to IAB activities of collecting and disseminating information on bryological research, publications and other activities, which is an important aspect in the information age.

Juan Carlos Villarreal A.

Brief background: I completed a B.Sc. at the University of Panama on the morphological and anatomical variation of the hornwort genus Megaceros (now Nothoceros) in Panama under the direction of Noris Salazar Allen. Since then he completed a M. Sc. at Southern Illinois University, on the phylogenetics and ultrastructure of two hornworts: Leiosporoceros dussii and Phaeomegaceros fimbriatus under the direction of Karen Sue Renzaglia. I completed my doctorate at the University of Connecticut (UCONN) under the supervision of Bernard Goffinet. My research was focused on the genetic consequences of the transitions to asexuality in the Southern Appalachian endemic hornwort Nothoceros aenigmaticus using phylogenetic, population genetic, and genomic approaches. Funding for my research was provided by the National Science Foundation, the International Associations of Bryologists, the International Association of Plant Taxonomists, Southern Appalachian Botanical Society, Ronald Bamford Endowment, UCONN presidential award and the A.J. Sharp Fund.

Current interests: Hornwort systematics, ultrastructure and development, chloroplast physiology, molecular phylogenetics, population genetics, molecular dating, genomic approaches.

Contribution to IAB: I hope to contribute diseminating bryological research from Europe, North America, Asia and Africa in Latin America. There are many excellen researchers and students in all Latin America and sometimes literature has not become readily accesible. Science is advancing at large strides and little is known about the basic biology of many Neotropical species. Collaborative projects between Latin American researchers and from other continents may help to uncover our valuable biodiversity.

Jo Wilbraham

My bryological life took shape during my MSc several years ago with my thesis project producing a taxonomic revision of Zygodon in the Himalayas. My career has since led me to the Natural History Museum London (BM) where I have undertaken work on the bryophyte herbarium type catalogue digitisation project and have concurrently been able to carry on my research into systematics of the Orthotrichaceae family in sub-Saharan Africa. I am an active member of the British Bryological Society, serving as elected council member 2008-2011 and acting as coordinator for the Tropical Bryology Group (TBG) since 2006. My TBG role has included putting together the annual newsletter, maintaining the website and assisting with coordination of projects. Should I be elected to IAB council I would bring my interests in tropical bryophyte floristics and in the role of herbarium collections in addressing future needs in bryology. I would also bring my enthusiasm to promote bryophytes to the wider world!

Virendra Nath
Dr. Virendra Nath a pupil of eminent bryologist of the country late Professor Ram Udar, F.N.A. has been working for last 38 years in the field of Bryology and developed a School of Bryology at NBRI . He supervised research work on diversity assessment, morpho-taxonomy, bioprospection, and conservation studies of Indian bryophytes. He has made extensive survey and collections from various bryologically rich areas of the country which includes some of the remote areas as well as high altitude localities of western Himalaya (Gaumukh, Gangotri etc.), eastern Himalaya (Sandakphu, Phalut etc.) and South India, and also paid attention to the bryophytes of N.E. hill States: Sikkim, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland.
He has discovered 14 species new to Science and 15 new records to India and published 125 research papers, floristic accounts of Hepatics of Khasi & Jaintia hills, Tamia & Patalkot and bryoflora of Amarkantak & Achanakmar sanctuary, besides editing three books. He has also made monographic studies on Indian Frullaniaceae. In the year 1986 he was deputed to visit Poland under CSIR - PAS exchange Programme, and in the year 1988 to Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London and visited the herbaria of the Reading University, Oxford Forestry Institute and British Natural History Museum, London under Common Wealth Programme. He also attended World Conference of Bryology at Malaysia in 2007.
The International Association of Bryologists (IAB) has nominated him contact person for India and was also elected as Fellow of Indian Botanical Society (F.B.S), Society of Ethnobotanists (F.E.S) and Palaeobotanical Society (F.Pb.S.).
He acted as Head of Bryology Group since last 27 years and also Area Co-ordinator of Plant Biodiversity & Conservation Biology Division at NBRI, Lucknow. He has supervised several research Projects as PI and Co-ordinator. He was also recognized as PI of All India Co-ordinated Programme on Taxonomy & Capacity Building by Ministry of Environment & Forests, New Delhi. He supervised ten students for Ph.D. Degree.

Noris Salazar Allen

Postdoctal Fellowship, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (1989-1990) and Fulbright Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. (2003) Currently treasurer of the Sociedad Latinoamericana de Briología (Latin American Bryological Society).

My research focuses on the systematics and evolution of tropical bryophytes and, lichens of Panama. I am currently working on the worldwide revision of the thalloid liverwort Dumortiera and the Neotropical species of the moss Octoblepharum. I am also working on the morphology and distribution of the hornwort Notothylas in Panama and Central America and floristics of various sites in Panama. I am particularly interested in aspects of phytogeography and how it relates to conservation and management of habitats and policy making. I have a strong interest in educational outreach, using the various multimedia available.

As a member of the Council of the IAB I will encourage: an increase participation at the IAB, of bryologists and students in developing countries, particularly in the Neotropics; an increase in educational outreach by providing advise (consultation) and fostering training seminars for its members and those of other bryological associations on the use of the various multimedia available for dissemination of bryological research at all levels (and in different languages)and I will work towards strengthening cooperation between major bryological herbaria whose curators are members of the IAB and herbaria in third world countries to encourage training of personnel in bryology and development and/or improvement of bryological herbaria in these areas. By doing these we will be contributing to conservation efforts in these countries policy making and sustainable use of their natural resources.

Prof. Rui-Liang Zhu

Prof. Rui-Liang Zhu, is the head of the botany department of East China Normal University (ECNU), Shanghai, China, and the curator of Biological History Museum of ECNU (HSNU). He got his Master degree in bryology from East China Normal University in 1989, and PhD in Bryology from the Hong Kong Baptist University in 1999. He received Humboldt Research Fellowship in 2002, and worked on the taxonomic revision of Asian Lopholejeunea (Lejeuneaceae) with Prof. S.R. Gradstein in University of Göttingen. His main research interests are taxonomy and phylogeny of liverworts and hornworts. Currently he is the associate editor of “Journal of Systematics and Evolution” and “Cryptogamie Bryologie”. He has received various research grants from the Chinese government, including the grant from National Natural Science Foundation of China for Distinguished Young Scholars of China. In 2009 he was appointed as the president of the Bryological Society of China (BSC).

If elected, I will do my best for IAB. With the rapid economic and bryological development in Asia in recent years, as one of Asian bryologists, I will strengthen the Asian bryological activities for bryophyte investigation and conservation. I also hope to organize the first Asian bryological congress, and also hope to organize IAB congress in Shanghai or elsewhere. As the president of the president of the Bryological Society of China, I will also try to organize the bryological activities during the 19th Botanical Congress held in China in 2017.

Have you ever walked the many trails and parks in Lane County, particularly during the rainy season and noticed moss covered trees, branches and rocks? In a natural setting moss looks quite beautiful. Draped on tree branches it sets a tone of an ancient, almost medieval quality. Along streams and waterfalls, moss creates plush green cushions that accent the water features.

This picturesque scene may be reproduced indoors using sealed containers known as terrariums or in open dish containers with relatively little effort.
What is moss? True moss are bryophytes, meaning they have no vascular system or veins to transport nutrients or water.They have no roots to draw nutrients, nor do they flower or seed. Instead, mosses draw nutrients directly through their leaves in a hair-like structure called a rhizoid. Rhizoids adhere to a plants surface. Moss colonies often consists of hundreds of tiny plants growing tightly together to form a dense mat. Since moss takes nutrients from the leaves and not the roots, it can grow on living trees without being parasitic or interfering with the trees growth.

Western professor leaves lifetime collection to Museum of Nature

While it was simply a hobby for Frank Cook, the Canadian Museum of Nature has cashed in with the amateur naturalist’s donation of more than 1,500 plant specimens including rare and endangered species of mosses.

The University of Western Ontario professor emeritus (botany/biology) amassed his collection over more than 35 years of fieldwork, starting around 1970. The 90-year-old Cook, who now lives on Barrie, taught plant physiology at Western for 35 years prior to retiring in 1987.

The new additions to Canada’s national plant collection include mosses and liverworts, both part of a distinctive group of small plants known as bryophytes. The specimens are mostly from locales in southern Ontario, with some from British Columbia as well as Australia and New Zealand.

Rare Moss Collection Donated to Canadian Museum of Nature

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 20, 2011) -

The Canadian Museum of Nature has received a donation of more than 1,500 plant specimens that includes rare and endangered species of mosses. Most represent species that were found in southern Ontario.

The additions to Canada's national plant collection come from Frank Cook, an amateur naturalist and retired biology professor from the University of Western Ontario. Cook, aged 90, now lives in Barrie, Ontario. He had amassed his collection over more than 35 years of fieldwork, starting around 1970.

"He was the consummate field biologist, who loved to tramp through bogs and fields," explains Cook's son Ian. "He realized that bryophytes were a group that hadn't had a lot of work done on them, so he saw them as an interesting subject to collect and study."

The specimens include mosses, as well as liverworts – both part of a distinctive group of small plants known as bryophytes. They are mostly from locales in southern Ontario, with some from British Columbia as well as Australia and New Zealand.

We are pleased to announce that field scientific school for early-stage researchers of bryology «Bryophytes of Subarctic» will be held from 27-30th of June 2012 in Polar-Alpine Botanical Garden-Institute (Kirovsk, Murmansk Prov.). The field scientific school for early-stage researchers will be held in venue of the conference and will provide PhD students and postdocs with practical training in bryophyte identification. The school languages are Russian and English.

During the field scientific school for early-stage researchers we plan excursions through Murmansk Region. Participants of the field excursions should provide a special clothes and equipment yourself. As the excursions need significant financial outlay, we try to receive some extra funding to minimize participants’ expenses. Details of payment for excursion will be outlined in the Second Circular.

For preliminary registration please fill out the form provided below and send it to the following address before September 30, 2011. Please don’t postpone preliminary registration, because we need to know the number of potential participants to obtain proper financial support for the field trip.

Meet the “Mosses and Their Relatives” Workshop in Belfast

Belfast. If you look around, you’ll find all kinds of mosses and the moss family in the midcoast. The University of Maine Hutchinson Center is hosting a “Mosses Workshop” on October 21st. The four-hour workshop, Mosses and Their Relatives, will be offered on Friday, October 21 from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center, located at 80 Belmont Avenue in Belfast.

Mosses, liverworts and hornworts are all around us here in coastal Maine, yet they are not usually noticed or examined in detail. This workshop is designed to help beginners appreciate the features, identification, diversity, and ecology of mosses, liverworts and hornworts (collectively, Bryophytes).

The workshop will include time to collect some mosses in the field, and then work in the Hutchinson Center biology lab to identify samples using microscopes. We will discuss identification techniques, the anatomy, life cycle, and ecology of mosses, and major moss and liverwort groups. This workshop is designed for beginners and enthusiastic amateur naturalists. No prior knowledge about mosses or microscopes is necessary. Participants may wish to bring their digital camera.

The workshop will be taught by Dr. Alison Dibble. Dr. Dibble holds a Ph.D. in Plant Science and an M.S. in Botany from the University of Maine, as well as a B.A. in English Literature from Hartwick College. She has held many positions in the field of Botany, including Assistant Research Professor at the University of Maine, Seasonal contractor for the US Forest Service, and a Consulting Ecologist funded by the Northern States Research Council; and worked most recently as a guest instructor at the College of the Atlantic teaching Lichen Biology.

The cost of the workshop is $45, which includes lab supplies and a healthy snack. What do big red stem, knight's plume, tree skirt and Juniper's haircap have in common?
These are all names for different kinds of mosses. While most of us probably suspect that there is a varied and diverse world of mosses living in our woods, we have not taken the time to look for that diversity, namely because this is a group of organisms that can be incredibly difficult to identify. Mosses are tiny and the terminology used to describe them is daunting. Just take a look at a typical description "Rhizoids below leaf insertions are smooth; stem hyalodermis lacking...;. shoots julaceous (especially when dry)" Dense reading!

However, if you can look beyond, or learn a little bit about, the intricate technical anatomical details associated with this group, I guarantee you will be enchanted by the startling beauty of these tiny, ancient plants.
Mosses are members of a larger group of primitive plants called bryophytes. This group also includes the liverworts and hornworts. All of these are small, non-vascular plants, meaning they do not have the system of tubes to transport water and nutrients that vascular plants like ferns and flowers and trees do. They don't have roots, stems or flowers. Mosses are, in fact, more similar to algae than to other terrestrial plants.

Abstract:

Recent botanical investigations in Québec, notably in northern regions difficult to access, allowed us to update our knowledge of the bryoflora of this vast territory. New information is presented on 1 hornworth, 62 liverworts, 4 sphagna and 72 mosses. Of these 139 taxa, 3 mosses and 1 liverwort are new to Canada, and 13 liverworts, 2 sphagna and 14 mosses are mentioned for the first time in Québec–Labrador. Numerous range extensions are reported, notably for rare taxa. Distinctive characteristics are discussed for each taxon and a dichotomic key is presented for difficult taxa. A distribution map within Québec–Labrador completes the information for 135 taxa. Eleven species historically mentioned for this territory are now excluded.

That doesn't begin to say it: Seattle is shivering — enduring the coldest average high temperature for the first half of April on record at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. And there's no end in sight, the National Weather Service says.

The Februarylike weather has been sticking around, even as rainfall this month has come in at about 3 inches — more than what usually falls in all of April.

Blame it in part on the jet stream, parked to the south, bringing a cool western, northwesterly flow of air our way, and allowing disturbances to ride into the southern states, including deadly tornadoes in the Southeast.

For us, this weather is just a vector for spring fever, with warmer temperatures teasing us during brief sunbreaks amid implacable clouds.
It's all relative, of course. Our crummy spring is a glory for that signature denizen of Seattle: moss. The glorious green yang to our gloomy gray yin, moss is reveling in all this cool, moist weather.

It is my pleasure as Editor-in-chief of Lindbergia to announce that the journal from now on will be available on-line as an Open Access journal.

Thanks to economic support from the owners of Lindbergia, the Nordic Bryological Society and the Dutch Bryological and Lichenological Society, all published papers will be free for download from volume 34 and onwards. For the time being it will also be free for authors to publish papers in Lindbergia.

The scope of the journal will remain unchanged. Submitted manuscripts will be subjected to peer review and published promptly after acceptance and final editing.

TROPICOS as a source for bryophyte literature citations

The recent discussions on bryonet concerning the availability of regional floras has led to an enhancement of the References section of TROPICOS as an aid to locating these.
The TROPICOS References database contains just over 120,000 citations, and nearly 38,000 are coded as bryophyte. The TROPICOS system has been used for about 25 years to accumulate the citations in the Recent Literature on Mosses, later Bryophytes, column in The Bryologist.

The keyword search option has recently been modified to allow the use of more than one key word. By adding bryophyte to your key word, you will eliminate items that do not pertain to bryophytes. For example, the keyword Florida returns 226 items; the keywords Florida,bryophyte returns 32 items. Lists are returned sorted by author, but by clicking on the Year column, the list will be resorted by year of publication, oldest to most recent. Click Year again, and the list will be resorted most recent to oldest. Thus one may obtain a list literature on Florida bryophytes that is easily examined for the most recently published literature. You rarely find people in British gardens extolling moss's virtues or discussing the best ways to cultivate it, yet in Japan, some of the finest displays of horticultural and design skills are displayed in moss gardens.

Last summer, I visited a garden in Bomarzo, Italy, that was filled with enormous sculptures carved from the huge boulders of volcanic stone that littered the woods. Over the centuries, many of the sculptures have become covered with the richest, greenest coating of moss imaginable.

Survivors: Worldwide, there are about 25,000 different species of bryophytes and they have become expert at colonising niches where most other plants cannot, or choose not to, grow

International Association of Bryologists’ (IAB) meeting in Melbourne, 2011

IBC2011, 18th International Botanical Congress,
Melbourne, 23-30 July 2011

The International Botanical Congress will be held in Melbourne next year. As on previous occasions, the International Association of Bryologists’ (IAB) meeting will be held in conjunction with the IBC. A local organising committee for the IAB part of the conference, consisting of Paddy Dalton, Christine Cargill, Allan Fife, Pina Milne, Helen Jolley and Niels Klazenga was established about three years ago, shortly after the IAB conference in Kuala Lumpur. In the last year or so we have been busy strong-arming people into organising symposia, arranging the IAB dinner and other things.

The following symposia will be held at the IBC under the auspices of IAB:

· Genomics and bioinformatics of bryophytes (Scott Schuette)
· Hornworts: evolution, biology and biodiversity (Jeff Duckett, Chris Cargill)
· Fine-scale phylogenetics and biogeography in mosses (Brent Mishler, Terry Hedderson)
· The 'Bryophyte Tree of Life (BryoToL)': towards a bryophyte phylogeny group (BPG) (Dietmar Quandt, Alain Vanderpoorten, Sanna Huttunen)
· Liverwort phylogeny and evolution: a window into early land plant diversification (Jon Shaw, Bernard Goffinet).

Unfortunately, a sixth symposium on ecology and conservation of bryophytes did not get over the line. Three more symposia that must have bryophyte papers were found on the list of accepted symposia.

· Marchantia as a Model for Evolutionary and Developmental Biology
· Developmental genetics and cell biology of Marchantia polymorpha
· Fungal symbioses in cryptogamic land plants.

There should also be plenty of interest in the other 140 or so symposia.

The dead-line for submission of abstracts for papers is 7 November 2010 (not updated on IBC website yet, but from reliable source). Dead-line for poster presentations is 1 February 2011. Papers have to fit in one of the 150 symposia, posters in one of the seven main themes of the conference.

We have arranged for an IAB dinner on Thursday 28 July at University House, University of Melbourne, a short distance to the north of the conference venue. We are also trying to organise a mixer on the first day of the conference, but as yet do not know whether we can fit it in the already busy schedule of the conference and whether there is a space available.

One of us has been looking at IAB/IBC merchandise, so prepare to go home with junk you don’t need. We are actually trying to find something marginally useful and sustainable.

Preceding the conference will be the week-long nomenclature session where decisions will be made on proposals for amendments to the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN). We will have a Melbourne Code.

After the congress there will be several post-conference field trips. Some of the local organising committee members will be on selected field trips, so there will be some local bryophyte expertise.

We have heard some concerns about the steeply priced accommodation on the conference site. We have tried to do a group booking for bryologists, but the conference organisers did not cooperate. We are still looking for other options. In the mean time, there is plenty of accommodation available in Melbourne if you look a bit further than the IBC website. I would look in the Carlton/Parkville area, near Melbourne University, which is a nice neigbourhood with plenty of places to eat, or in the South Melbourne/South Yarra area, near the Royal Botanic Gardens. Both are reasonably close to the conference centre. Bear in mind though that the Australian dollar is extremely strong at the moment, so prices are bound to be high. The accommodation listed on the IBC website is cheaper than it was in Vienna six years ago, and so is the registration fee.

The congress will be held during the southern hemisphere winter, which in Melbourne can be anything from glorious to cold, wet and miserable. It being Melbourne, we’ll probably have a bit of everything.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have just passed a second year Master degree (five years after high school diploma) in Preservation and Restoration of the Biodiversity (CRB) in Metz (Lorraine, France). Being deeply interested in botany (several training courses in France and Italy in botanic and phytosociology), I would like to complete my professional skills with a training in bryology. I have already notions but I have to find an organism with specialists if I really want to make progress. In France, bryology science is less dynamic that in your country and it is difficult to me to find a formation. I am in search of a professional training period with one or several specialists during which I'll can learn about mosses and contribute to a scientific study. I shall be available from December 2010 for a period between one week and 6 months.

On the other hand, my scientific vocation as well as my naturalist's personal experiences allowed me to acquire knowledge through useful fields such as organism biology, dynamics of the populations, ecosystems physico-chemistry… These experiences are completed by notions of cartography SIG (mapinfo®, arcgis), by descriptive and analytical statistics (statbox, R) and environmental legislation as well as ecosystems management preservation.

The invasion of the land by plants: when and where?

The land plants (Embryophytes) are a monophyletic group that evolved as an adaptive response to the migration from a freshwater aquatic to terrestrial subaerial habitat. Phylogenetic analysis of extant plants suggests that charo-phycean green algae share a sister group relationship with the Embryophytes, that is, the land plants probably evolved from a freshwater aquatic multicellular green alga similar to extant Chara and Coleochaete (Graham, 1993). Within the Embryophytes liverworts are the most basal group, followed by mosses, and then hornworts and vascular plants sharing a sister group relationship (Qiu et al., 2006). However, it is to the fossil record we must turn if we are to understand what the first land plants were like and when and where they evolved.

The diversity of life that can be seen in environments ranging from the rainforests of the Amazon to the spring blooms of the Mohave Desert is awe-inspiring. But this diversity would not be possible if the ancestors of modern plants had just stayed in the water with their green algal cousins. Moving onto dry land required major lifestyle changes to adapt to this new "hostile" environment, and in turn helped change global climate and atmospheric conditions to conditions we recognize today. By absorbing carbon while making food, and releasing oxygen, early plants shaped ecosystems into a more hospitable environment, paving the way for animals to make a parallel journey onto land.

New research by Dr. Linda Graham and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin, Madison focuses on this transition and adaptive changes in the uptake of carbon-based compounds, such as sugars. This work, which is published in the September issue of the American Journal of Botany, suggests a basis for incorporating evolutionary/paleontological information into global carbon cycling models.

All plants descended from a group of ancestral green algae, whose modern representatives thrive in aqueous environments. The simplest of modern land plants—several groups of bryophytes—are the closest living relatives to the first plants to colonize land. By comparing green algae and bryophytes, Graham and her co-researchers obtained insight into the evolutionary hurdles that plants needed to overcome to transition successfully to life on land, and how early plants' success influenced carbon cycling.

The researchers quantified and compared growth responses to exogenously (externally) supplied sugars in two green algae, Cylindrocystis brebissoni and Mougeotia sp., and one peat moss species, Sphagnum compactum. They found that sugar/carbon uptake in peat moss was not restricted to the products of photosynthesis. Rather, addition of sugars to the growth media increased biomass by almost 40-fold. This ability to utilize sugars not only from photosynthesis but also from the environment is called mixotrophy, not previously thought to play a significant role in the growth of mosses. The two green algae also responded to external sugar, though less so than the peat moss.
Peat mosses "store a large percentage of global soil carbon, thereby helping to stabilize Earth's atmospheric chemistry and climate," stated Graham.

Third Physcomitrella Genome Workshop, Freiburg, Germany

The Third Physcomitrella Genome Workshop will take place on 13 to 15 September at the University of Freiburg, Germany.

The Physcomitrella genome was first sequenced at the Joint Genome Institute (JGI) of the US Department of Energy and published in 2008 by a consortium of 70 researchers from 45 different laboratories. The event will focus in particular on the annotation of this genome, which has become a model organism in applied and in basic biology.

The workshop will aim to create a lively working atmosphere and by providing ample space for hands-on mining and annotating of the moss genome. Insights into genomic resources for other bryophytes will also be provided.

The organisers of the conference have constructed a website containing information about the moss genome. The event will talk about this new resource, which aims to attract additional researchers to help in further annotation of moss genes.

The plant hormone ABA has been studied using LC-MS-MS

The impact of the plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) has been studied by Chinese scientists using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) and gel electrophoresis.

Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Botany and the Capital Normal University collaborated on the study, which is published in BMC Plant Biology this week.

They used LC-MS-MS to determine how ABA affects Physcomitrella patens, a species of moss.

Among their findings, they discovered that the hormone is capable of defending plants against oxidative damage by triggering defence and stress responses.

"Physiological and molecular responses to the plant hormone ABA appear to be conserved among higher plant species and bryophytes," they conclude.

This is in addition to the other effects that the hormone is known to have on plantlife at different stages in its development.

Conservation between higher plants and the moss Physcomitrella patens in response to the phytohormone abscisic acid: a proteomics analysis

The plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) is ubiquitous among land plants where it plays an important role in plant growth and development. In seeds, ABA induces embryogenesis and seed maturation as well as seed dormancy and germination.

In vegetative tissues, ABA is a necessary mediator in the triggering of many of the physiological and molecular adaptive responses of the plant to adverse environmental conditions, such as desiccation, salt and cold.

Results: In this study, we investigated the influence of abscisic acid (ABA) on Physcomitrella patens at the level of the proteome using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Sixty-five protein spots showed changes in response to ABA treatment.

Sexual reproduction in Marchantia - the archegonial head makes the egg cells and, after fertilization with sperm splashed over by the rain from the male part of the plant, the zygote develops into a sporophyte that stays attached underneath the head. The young sporophytes are covered by the white calyptra developing from the wall of the archegonium until the sporangium emerges from its cover. The diploid sporophyte pretty much consists only of a foot (where it is attached to the gametophyte), a short stalk (or seta), and a sporangium which produces spores through meiosis. The rest of the plant is haploid.

Sphagnum spores, which have low terminal velocities, are carriedby turbulent wind currents to establish colonies many kilometersaway. However, spores that are easily kept aloft are also rapidlydecelerated in still air; thus, dispersal range depends stronglyon release height. Vascular plants grow tall to lift sporesinto sufficient wind currents for dispersal, but nonvascularplants such as Sphagnum cannot grow sufficiently high. High-speedvideos show that exploding capsules of Sphagnum generate vortexrings to efficiently carry spores high enough to be dispersedby turbulent air currents. Spores launched ballistically atsimilar speeds through still air would travel a few millimetersand not easily reach turbulent air. Medicine from Moss: Bioreactor Technique May Offer Hope to People With Age-Related Blindness

ScienceDaily (July 21, 2010) — Diabetics use human insulin produced in bacteria in order to treat their metabolic disorder. Many other genetically engineered proteins are also on the advance. They are being used for diagnosis as well as for therapy.

Whereas insulin used to be extracted from slaughterhouse waste today it is produced genetically in bacteria. However, more complex proteins have to be synthesised in more complex organisms. This takes place mostly in bioreactors using animal cell lines. Biotechnologist Prof. Ralf Reski from Freiburg, Germany, has developed the moss Physcomitrella patens into a safe and inexpensive alternative supplier of medicine.

His group has now, under Dr. Eva Decker, for the first time succeeded in producing a human protein in a moss bioreactor, which has been assigned the "orphan drug" status by the respective EU authorities. This means the development and approval of such medication receive particular support from the authorities. In many people the amount of this protein decreases with old age -- with severe consequences. Eva Decker explains: "With the complement factor H we have produced a protein in moss that otherwise occurs only in blood and is important for the immune system. Not enough of this protein in older people is the main cause of blindness for 50 million people worldwide. This age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a problem, particularly in industrialised countries."

Biochemists from the Freiburg Centre for Systems Biology under Dr. Andreas Schlosser were able to show with the help of high-performance mass spectrometers that the human factor H engineered into and produced by moss was a complete protein. Infection biologists headed by Prof. Peter F. Zipfel from the Hans-Knöll-Institute in Jena, Germany, were able to prove in biological assays that factor H from moss is fully functional. "Currently factor H is not available in pharmacies, so treatment for AMD with this protein is not possible. To date recombinant production of factor H was barely feasible. I am convinced that for the first time the moss bioreactor is a promising option," says Peter Zipfel.

This work was supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Freiburg Initiative for Systems Biology and the Cluster of Excellence BIOSS.

Dr. Annette Büttner-Mainik, first author of the publication, was a Kekulé scholarship holder from the endowment fund of the German Chemical Industry (FCI).

"It will take a while before medication produced in moss is available in pharmacies," says Ralf Reski, member of the Innovation Think Tank of the governor of Baden-Wuerttemberg. "We are further optimising the moss bioreactor using methods from Systems Biology and Synthetic Biology. However, the implementation of clinical studies and the setting up of industrial production is long-winded and expensive; this is the task of industry and not of university research."

IAB BLOG

I am able to grow many different species of mosses in my moss gardens. I have also established moss gardens at two public gardens, Luthy Botanical Garden in Peoria, Illinois and Illinois Central College Horticulture Garden in East Peoria, Illinois.

If you are interested in growing moss for whatever reason then this is a synopsis of how I do it.

I use an artificial mat system of three different materials. These materials are not visible once the moss is established.

The first layer is thin plastic sheeting, 5 ml thick for example. It can be either clear or black. The plastic is placed on the ground.

The second layer is spun polyester or polypropylene material commonly called synthetic felt or craft felt and is sold in cloth or material stores.

Moss is placed on top of the felt. The felt acts as a sponge and stores water for the moss and the thin plastic sheeting prevents the soil from wicking the moisture away.

The third layer is black colored tulle, fine not coarse mesh with a matte finish. Tulle is pronounced “tool”. The tulle is almost invisible when it is on top of the moss. As the moss grows, the tulle disappears into the moss. Despite the small mesh size, the o in this sentence is the size of the tulle mesh, even Polytrichum commune will grow up through tulle. The tulle keeps weed seeds from getting into the moss garden and prevents birds from tearing up the moss garden in search of nesting material or invertebrates.

Many genera such as Thuidium, Hypnum, Rhodobryum and Bryoandersonia for example will grow directly on the felt. Some species of mosses like Dicranum scoparium and Leucobryum glaucum do require a thin 1 cm layer of hardwood mulch placed under the moss and on top of the felt.

The three layer moss mat system should be contoured to gently drain water away from the mat and not allow water to pool.

Some of the mosses I am able to grow: Anomodon attenuatus, Bartramia pomiformis, Brachythecium salebrosum, Bryoandersonia illecebra, Bryum caespiticium, Climacium americanum, Dicranum flagellare, Dicranum scoparium, Dicranum viride, Entodon seductrix, Hedwigia ciliata, Hypnum imponens, Leucobryum glaucum, Plagiomnium cuspidatum, Polytrichum juniperinum, Polytrichum commune, Rhodobryum roseum, Thuidium delicatulum.

Thallose liverworts and Sphagnum species can also be grown on the artificial mat but require additional procedures to prevent desiccation.

Moss can serve as a wonderful green ground cover. Vascular plants can be planted in the moss garden by cutting an X in the three layers and directly planting the flower, bush or fern in the exposed soil.

I do not water my moss gardens but if you do, use only rainwater or distilled. Other water sources such as ground water, well water or surface waters, i.e. lakes, ponds or river waters are unacceptable and will all fail eventually because of pH, alkalinity, hardness and dissolved salts. Watering is generally unnecessary and often counterproductive, particularly when growing moss on an artificial mat system.

My goal is to encourage the use of moss as a ground cover in shady areas of our gardens and landscapes. Any botanic garden, arboretum or nature center that wishes free assistance in establishing a moss garden can contact me or visit the website.

National and state parks are off limits to collecting moss. I ask landowners for permission to collect. Most yards have shady areas where moss can be found.

Currently I am doing a lot of work on propagation techniques.

The primary commercial source of live mosses in the United States is Moss Acres in Pennsylvania. Their website is www.mossacres.com. Al Benner and his father Dave are to be commended for encouraging moss gardening in the United States.

I have written a handbook, New Methods in Moss Gardening, which is based on moss gardening workshops I have given over the years. As a former potable supply water chemist with a B. A. in Biology and lengthy horticultural experience I have spent years growing many species of mosses and developing this simple inexpensive low maintenance method of moss gardening. Remedial farm plans have taken some effect, but most of the heather has vanished for good, and with it many of the botanically famous rarities of Ireland’s mountain plant life. Some typical damage was spelled out this spring in the UK science journal Field Bryology , under the heartfelt heading: “The tragedy of the Twelve Bens of Connemara: is there a future for Adelanthus lindenbergianus ?” As little plants most people don’t know exist, the liverworts tend to get stuck with only scientific names, “Lindenberg’s featherwort” is at least a little easier to say, but what is so special about it? Like the mosses, liverworts were some of the earliest land plants of the planet, branching off the vegetable evolutionary tree below the ferns and then the plants with flowers. Many of them seek out out the shade of heather and other dwarf shrubs among the rocky scree of rain-soaked oceanic mountains. There they form a mat, often a striking mix of colours, that helps weld the stones together.

Bryophytes and Bryophyte Ecology
with Nancy G. Slack
August 15 - 21, 2010

This seminar is intended for participants who have some experience in the identification of bryophytes, or who have a strong interest in bryophytes and an understanding of field botany and ecology. Participants will learn to identify Maine bryophytes from an ecological point of view. We will study bryophyte communities in the fi eld in a variety of habitats, including both coniferous and deciduous forest, bogs and other wetlands, and shorelines. Participants will sharpen their fi eld skills by learning helpful ways to develop “search patterns” for moss and liverwort species. Further practice with microscope skills will help participants to learn how to approach identifying difficult species. Field trips to representative and varied habitats of coastal Maine will be taken to learn to recognize and

evaluate bryophyte communities. A special feature of this seminar is a class inventory of the bryophytes of one diverse natural area, supporting participants who have research interests, or who may wish to conduct bryophyte inventories in their home areas. Lectures and discussion will include ecophysiology of bryophytes, special adaptations of mosses to particular environments, and recent fi ndings in relation to bryophytes as climate change monitors. Bruce Allen’s Mosses of Maine will be useful for this seminar, as well as the ecological chapters of the new Introduction to Bryophytes (paperback) by Vanderpoorten and Goffinet.

Dr. Nancy G. Slack (nslack@nycap.rr.com) is Professor of Biology at the Sage Colleges (NY), an ecological consultant, and is former President of the American Bryological and Lichenolgical Society. She conducts bryophyte workshops for Natural Heritage Program ecologists. She has published extensively on bryophyte ecology, species diversity, and community structure and also on old growth forests, bogs and fens, and epiphytes. She is the author of 85 Acres: A Field Guide to the Adirondack Summits and AMC Field Guide to the New England Alpine Summits (new edition, May 2006). Her co-authored book, Bryophyte Ecology and Climate Change will be published by Cambridge University Press in 2010.

LIVRE / La Société Botanique du Centre-Ouest publie Les Mousses et Hépatiques de Païolive (Ardèche et Gard), ouvrage de Vincent HUGONNOT.

Le bois de Païolive est un site mythique, réputé pour sa forêt ancienne et le spectaculaire défilé du Chassezac. Les reliefs ruiniformes très pittoresques font partie des principaux attraits touristiques du bois. La rare Cétoine bleue, Coléoptère emblématique des vieilles forêts, est abondante à Païolive. Le simple parcours à pied du bois de Païolive permet de se rendre compte que les pelouses sèches, les dalles rocheuses et les forêts sont couvertes de mousses et d’hépatiques. Des garrigues méditerranéennes aux falaises à affinités montagnardes, les bryophytes sont partout.
Malgré cette luxuriance, aucun inventaire bryologique, historique ou récent, ne portait spécifiquement sur ce site.
Durant plusieurs années, grâce à une exploration méthodique de l’ensemble des gras, 300 mousses et hépatiques ont été inventoriées. Ces chiffres font de Païolive l’un des sites, sinon le site, le plus riche en bryophytes du sud-est de la France.
Cephaloziella integerrima, Mannia californica, M. triandra, Antitrichia californica, Ephemerum recurvifolium, Orthotrichum sprucei, Pyramidula tetragona, Riccia crustata et Zygodon forsteri sont les joyaux floristiques du site. Cet exceptionnel ensemble naturel n’en est pas moins agressé de toutes parts par des activités humaines diverses mal contrôlées.
Basé sur plus de 11 000 données floristiques et sur quelques 300 cartes de répartition, l’atlas présente la distribution et l’écologie des mousses et des hépatiques du site de Païolive en détail. Plus de 250 espèces sont illustrées par des planches photographiques des caractères anatomiques utiles à la détermination.

En cette année de la biodiversité, il est important de souligner le regain d’intérêt de la bryologie par de nombreux acteurs, dont notamment le MEEDDM, le MNHN, la FCBN et Tela Botanica, et leurs volontés de travailler en commun.

Différents projets sont en cours de discussion. A court terme devrait notamment être lancé l’élaboration du référentiel nomenclatural et taxonomique sur les bryophytes et à moyen terme un atlas métropolitain (en sus du projet chorologie des bryophytes coordonné par C. Lemonnier dans le cadre du réseau Tela Botanica). Pour accompagner le développement de ces projets, nous proposons de mettre à disposition différents outils dédiés à la bryologie afin de faciliter la communication et le recueil de données.

Moss mantid?

I have attached a picture of a wonderful moss/liverwort mimic in the insect order Mantodea. This creature was introduced to me by Dorothy Allard from a field trip to Costa Rica and this picture was sent to me by Diane Lucas. However, we have been unable to identify it or find out its usual habitat and substrate.
There are moss mantids in the genus Acanthops, but I am not certain this is in the same genus - I have only been able to locate one picture from Ecuador - of just the head - and it seems every website that discusses the genus uses that picture.
I am hoping some of you with neotropical or South American experience can provide me a bit more information on habitat, usual or common substrate (does it really live among mosses), is it aerial or more at ground level, and what is its name. Any pictures with this insect in its native habitat would also be most welcome for my online book.

Help with ID: Limestone moss or liverwort?

Hello,

I observed this frondose-moss in Clayoquot Sound on limestone rock seeps in Tofino Inlet. I have never seen it before. Can anyone help me identify it? It is pinate shaped with overlapping costate/nerve leaves with a single row of ventral leaves along midrib. I wondered if it was a liverwort, but it appears more moss-like.

BryoSphere: a new service for sharing links and web bookmarks

With many web sites and bryological notes, it is becoming hard to keep up with current bryology over the Internet. BryoSphere is a new aggregation service for everything bryological on the cybersphere. It is a collection of bryological on-line resources in a customized feed made up of the content that you find and share.

Web sites will continue to be the classical and formal means to create and publish content on Internet. However, a more easy and open way to upload web content are blogs and feeds.
"Blogs", such as the IAB blog, are basically a simple way to compose, edit and publish new web content. Registered authors can post text, photos, and videos from any web browser or mobile phones. On the other hand, "feeds" are a way for websites and blogs to re-distribute their content well beyond just visitors using browsers. Feeds permit subscription to regular updates, delivered automatically via a web portal, news reader, or in some cases good old email. Feeds also make it possible for site content to be packaged into "widgets," "gadgets," mobile devices, and other bite-sized technologies that make it possible to display headlines from websites, blogs and podcasts. For example, check the BryoSphere gadget placed at the left column of the IAB blog site.
Thus, basically BryoSphere is an aggregation service or a collection of headlines or links shared by anyone! BryoSphere is a way to share bookmarks, so to speak.
The feed at FriendFeed BryoSphere hopefully will become a worldwide community project. Please subscribe to join and post to share your links to articles, news, photos, websites, etc! Check out the links, photos, and websites bryologists are sharing at http://friendfeed.com/bryosphere

Dear bryonet friends

In a reference entitled as "Medical ministry of rear service department, Kunming military area. Selected medicinal herbs of Yunnan. Tianjin People's press and printing factory, Tianjin 1970" authors are "Yun Nan Zhong Cao Yao Xuan".

To me it sounds that there are two authors instead of one as mentioned in paper entitled "Ethnobryology: traditional use & folk classification of brophyes" written by J K Harris. I will appreciate if any one of you please clarify me about it.

These are small tubers –the first image shows large lipid droplets inside the cells. The last image shows that they are produced from rhizoidal side branches cf chytrid galls which are terminal.

I cannot see cell walls on the tuber-like structures, which points me towards the possibility that they are nematode galls, or something similar.

Since I am focused on mosses that have horticultural applications in
sustainable landscapes, you'll find examples of "weedy" mosses – those
that grow quickly and are tolerant of both shade and sun exposures. I
have captured images of mosses in a variety of growth stages and
sporophytic states. Also, I've posted some Before/After shots of moss
garden features. Finally, I'm adding documentation of the expansion of
my moss garden installed last winter between Thanksgiving and New
Year's. Indeed, moss gardening in the winter can result in success for
year-round enjoyment. As always, I welcome your feedback or comments.

Mountain Moss Enterprises offers educational programs and a full range
of services as part of my commitment to promoting the advantages of
mosses. So, I keep trekking along my path toward my moss goals with:
